What we do

Maryland Science Olympiad for Baltimore City

One of several Out of School (OST) programs offered by STEM Champions of Baltimore is the school-season STEM tournament program Maryland Science Olympiad (MSO). It is part of the largest, most recognized national program for broad-ranged STEM called Science Olympiad (SO). SCB in Baltimore has the largest urban Science Olympiad program in the country. SO successfully converted and ran a virtual competition season last year, as is Maryland SO (MSO). We had 30 virtual teams, versus 32 in-person teams the year before. Our programs are very cost-effective versus other programs. This year our programs ran both in-person, virtual, or as hybrid as needed. Congratulations to all teams on an amazing season!

Summer STEM Curriculum

This summer, STEM Champions of Baltimore generated four STEM ‘camps’ for the University of Maryland’s CURE program, Baltimore City Schools Math program, Grace Presbyterian Church, and Ingenuity program. To adjust to virtual, critical adjustments of shorter activities, more incremental competing, and exploring their environment as well as interacting with other students and the teacher were keys to virtual success.

Training and Advising

STEM Champions of Baltimore also offers training programs for Baltimore City Schools teachers. Teachers teach teachers with STEM hands-on skills and curriculum. In partnership with Baltimore school district, we have 3-6 training sessions and workshops each year for teachers on content, skill, and character building.

Career Connections

We provide various programming, role model events and resource support to connect city youth middle school to high school, high school to college or career, and all to STEM careers in general. This includes exposing middle schoolers to the high achieving high schools, handouts, event participation, building partnerships, and more.
